The new teaching facility and administrative block at Riverside Community Primary School, Birstall, was designed to blend into the design of the existing school building, which dated from the 1930s.
The Archifab team worked in conjunction with LCC’s architects’ department at an early design stage of the building.
The design called for a smooth, clean coloured soffit fascia and gutter, and at this stage, the proposal was for a traditional fascia with a timber soffit and half-round gutter.
The Archifab team ran through several permutations of how to achieve the design requirements, arriving at a final solution which was simple as well as fitting all of the requirements of the design brief; a single piece would be constructed incorporating a shaped soffit with an integral gutter, which had added advantages of providing an element of anti-climb, along with a gutter that would cope with even the heaviest downpour of rain possible. A further benefit is the maintenance free aspect of the Archifab solution.
The main contractors described the work as "a labour and time saving solution", as the solution eliminated the need for the usual number of trades to construct a traditional timber soffit with gutter.
As the Archifab solution interfaced with 3 new roofs on the Stafford Leys, Millfield, and Dovebank schools, the Council was keen to let the package to one installer.
Torclad was therefore able to re-use the tooling for the ‘universal’ fascia soffit gutter system, and to maximise its installation experience gained from progressive installations to deliver value to the client, from a construction perspective, and reduced maintenance costs from a whole life perspective. |
